Progenika
Progenika Biopharma, S.A., formerly Medplant Genetics, S.L., was established in April 2000 as a leading company in Functional Genomics. The activities of Medplant Genetics focused on the identification and validation of genes and proteins as diagnostic and therapeutic tools, as well as on providing PharmacoGenomic solutions to the Pharmaceutical Industry.
The advances made by Medplant Therapeutical Targets Discovery programs have increased the scope of the company, which is now moving from Target Discovery to Drug Discovery Projects. The objective of these Drug Discovery Projects is the discovery of new Drugs that interact with the Targets that have already been identified and validated by our Scientists. In accordance with this new objective, we have moved to larger new facilities and changed the corporate name to PROGENIKA biopharma, S.A.
Progenika, using the latest tools and instrumentation, including DNA-microarrays, 2D electrophoresis, mass fingerprinting, and peptide sequencing, identifies genes and proteins showing quantitative or qualitative variation in diseased tissues. The most promising diagnosis candidate molecules are then clinically validated as potential markers by studying their expression levels in a patient population, and determining the correlation with clinical parameters. The most promising therapeutical target candidate molecules are functionally validated in both in vitro and in vivo models; if a particular gene or protein shows potential as a therapeutic target after functional validation, drug screening collaborations are established and performed using small molecules, antibodies or combinatorial chemical libraries.
Progenika´s facilities are based in the Zamudio Technology Park, in the outskirts of Bilbao, Spain. Progenika's laboratories are installed in an area of 500 m2, including 150 m2 of positive pressure laboratories, working under ISO9001 quality assurance procedures; an additional 400 m2 is currently being conditioned and will be fully functional by mid-2004.
Progenika's laboratories are installed in the BIOGUNE collaborative research centre. BIOGUNE is a centre devoted to Genomics, Proteomics and Metabonomics, where corporate and government-funded laboratories are working together. BIOGUNE is a purpose built facility, created with the objective of promoting interactions between public research groups and commercial R&D laboratories. BIOGUNE is one of the 46 world-wide nodes of the HUMAN PROTEOME ORGANIZATION (www.hupo.org). As an associated member of BIOGUNE, Progenika is involved in the HUPO Plasma and Liver Proteome Projects.
