FORTH

FORTH is National Research Centre composed of seven Institutes. PEML is a research unit of IESL (Institute of Electronic Structure and Lasers) with focused research on coatings, thin films, interface studies of various electronic and photonic material characterization. Over the last five years PEML has been successfully involved in the development of High frequency Photonic Band-Gap (PBG) structures utilizing on the one hand its own laser facilities (FORTH is a European UV laser Large Scale Facility) and on the other the large scale Synchrotron facilities at LURE and BESSY and the micro-machining infrastructure available at IMM - Mainz. At PEML we have also fabricated novel optoelectronic devices such as high-index gratings on wave-guides utilizing holographic techniques on proto-refractive materials produced in-house. Finally, one of our recent achievements is the fabrication of a very sensitive thin film gas sensor for toxic gases on a micro transducer. Most of the above work has been funded through National and European projects (HCM, TMR and RTD) with the direct involvement of pre-doc and post-doc researchers ( in total >200 man-months training of scholars) from all over Europe and in association with a network of more than 25 partners form National and private institutions
